SNEL's Programme
SNEL offers its programme in a variety of formats:
classes, in-house sessions for companies, private tuition, talks
to clubs, societies, etc.
The class sessions generally last for a little
under two hours. Some, such as History of English, just
have one session, others, such as Danish 1, have eight
sessions. They generally meet one evening a week at a venue in
south Edinburgh. The one-session
units may be offered on a Saturday. The standard programme is outlined
below. Those units that are marked with an asterisk give you the
opportunity to get more of a feel for what is on offer; click on
them and you’ll get a sample.
In-house sessions and private tuition
are based on this programme but can respond to particular requirements.
Clearly private tuition offers much faster progression as it focuses
solely on the needs and ability of one individual. The venue for
in-house sessions and private tuition is determined by agreement.
The one-session units – or a variation – can be delivered
within a club’s programme of talks. How about,
for example, an introduction to the linguistic fossil that is Icelandic,
an introduction to the history of English or an introduction to
the origins of some English words? Or a quiz?

In a level 1 unit such as Danish 1 you will, for example,
learn to introduce yourself, to describe things, to ask questions,
etc. By the end of level 2 you will have been introduced to every
tense, you should be able to compare things, to express opinions,
etc. Indeed by the end of level 2 you will have been introduced
to the basics of the language and will be ready to converse and
read.
A typical progression for somebody learning a
language from scratch, then, would be Introduction to Danish
> Danish 1 > Danish 2 > Danish conversation
/ Danish reading. When you enrol for a level 1 unit you
can attend the one-session introduction to the language
concerned for free! If you feel that it would be useful
you can tack on the units Grammar and the Germanic languages
and Phonetics and the Germanic languages.
