Stuart C. Poole MA, MPhil, FCIL
My best subject at school was German – probably because I found it more fascinating than the other subjects. I went to the University of Aberdeen to study German and Swedish but I got hooked on Swedish and came out with an MA Honours degree in Swedish studies. My fascination with the Germanic languages persists – there are always new discoveries to be made.

On the basis of my German and my Swedish I became a Member of the Institute of Linguists and I have since been elected a Fellow.

I have been involved in adult education for over twenty years. I began as a part-time teacher of Swedish in the evening class programme of the University of Edinburgh. This involvement increased until I was responsible for the programme of language courses at what is now the Office of Lifelong Learning. But I taught Swedish to the end – there’s no substitute for introducing students to the joys of a subject.

I have published two books, a textbook for Catalan (no, it’s not a Germanic language!) and an introduction to linguistics.

If you fancy getting better acquainted with the world of Germanic languages with the help (much better than the Romance word ‘aid’!) of SNEL I look forward to meeting you.
